Media and the Athlete

A little different direction but still the same.Here is an example of how people place the professional athlete on a different level. Are they that different , they do make alot more money but they are still human.
We have a local player who plays for our professional football team the Cincinnati Bengals and he is giving them an ultimatum either trade me to a different a team or I am going to retire. The media and local fan base is treating him like he ows the team something and that he is a quitter. So I ask the question what would any regular person do when it came to your job, if your not happy what do you do you look for other employment or pursue other options, so I ask another question what if you won the lottery, because basically that is what a sports athlete has done. If you had an upwards of 50 million in your account because you won the lottery what would you do? He is an unhappy employee who wants to pursue other options just like you or I would, except he has a huge cushion and honestly if I had that much money I would not work ever again or do something that I was very passionate about.  There is such a hypocracey within the sports world I mean if the media and the fan base feel they are not playing to the standard that we think they should we want them traded, but if they want to leave we think they are quitting on us.

The Ideal Self

The ideal self is something that I think everyone wants for themselves. Social Media allows for this happen.
Although I am on facebook, I have always been amused to the people who have friended you when your not really friends, but they know of you. When I first got on facebook I would receive friend requests from people who I did not even converse with in highschool. At the same time I started doing the same, friending people who I knew, but didn't really know. What I was intrigued about was not really being their friend but seeing how they turned out since high school. Comparing myself to others and then wanting to tweek my profile so I would appear to be something that I wasn't. As much I as I wanted to I did not, I had enough people on their that  knew what was going on in my life, so exagerating was never an option and I'm glad I didn't.
Social Media allows for you to become something that your not, everyone wants to feel good about themselves and to feel that people are impressed with you, but what happens when you meet the person and have gotten away from your actual self, your ideal self creates a misrepresentation of you.

Ethnic Groups in Media

As a whole I think people are more comfortable being around or seeing life from there own perspective. It's the way people live and survive. You go to bigger cities such as Chicago or New York and and cultures and ethnic groups can be segregated within one city. For example China town. People want to the option to be able see there own through there interpretation and through their own media outlet. However as we know having the resources to be able to watch there own channels is not feasable it takes money and for some that is not an option.
The question can be raised is it the responsibility of the media within the USA to offer those outlets? It is  necessary to be able to know what is going on in the world like through CNBC etc. But should it be our responsibilty to offer an international station.

Based on our discussion Thursday regarding children and the impact that children's television have on them in my opionion falls on the parent. Children are going to copy and try to act out what they watch on tv, whether it is spongebob or even transformers. Where I think the problem comes in is the lack of parental control. More parents are putting their children in front of the T.V. to get them out of their hair. I think you need to educate your children and make them understand what is real and what is not. I do think people want to put the responsibility on other sources, meaning that want to blame other things. "Its that Damn TV" or  "Its those Damn Video Games". Please. Parents just need to be aware. Children are going to be influenced and as a they get older it will be by their peers.

Stereotyping

To anyone who interested, comments will be welcome, but everyone try to put themsevles in another persons race. How do you think you would see the world? How do you think people will see you?

Gender

As stated Gender is a set of characteristics distinguishing between male and female, particularly in the cases of men and women. Depending on the context, the discriminating characteristics vary from sex to social role to gender identity. Moving away from the sexual orientation of a person, what else can we say about gender.
Gender puts us into roles that are set forth in Biology, is it fair no. Example like stated in class women are given an automatic disadvantage when looking for a job, the employer automatically seperates the women from a man because of the ability to have children, women ultimatley will need to medically take off from work and care for the infant and nurture herself.
The workforce is greatly prejudice between the two genders. When you step back and look at careers today, their is definatley an identity to a profession that is chosen, another example, is that  more physical jobs are geared to the male gender, now is that due to prejudice or biology? When I look at firefighters, is it realistic to believe that a female firefighter would be able to carry out a person twice their size, should the same equality be given. This in my opinion would be the fault of biology and not prejudice.
As far as the media, I think they are continuing the idea that it is still a man's role, you still see more dominant role geared to the man and with in their role you notice the hiearchy especially with looks and description. They mainly cast men for power professions and then they have the "trophy wife" who is sitting at home, or spending their time at the country club.
